I am currently finishing up my college experience as a senior at James Madison University. Come May I will receive a bachelor’s of science degree in communication studies with a concentration in public relations. I am a member of Lambda Pi Eta, a communication studies honor fraternity, Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), and the Association for Women in Communication (AWC). All of these clubs provide new insights into the practice of public relations and also offer great networking opportunities with both JMU students and PR professionals.
My passion outside of school has always been dance. I have been dancing for 19 years and hope to continue for many years. At JMU I am an executive board member and lyrical division choreographer for Madison Dance Club. We are a wonderful club that offers JMU students the opportunity to share their artistic talents and perform around the JMU campus.
This past summer I had the wonderful opportunity to internship with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. I interned in the Office of Public Affairs and did much of the work that the professional public affairs managers did. I interviewed many Colonial Williamsburg employees, wrote many articles for the in-house newsletter, crafted press releases, along with many other public relations activities. The internship gave me a brief but very valuable glimpse into the life of a public relations professional.
Following graduation, I hope to attend graduate school. I have recently applied to Syracuse University and American University for their masters’ programs in public relations. I chose to attend graduate school immediately following the completion of my undergraduate degree because many of the masters’ programs provided useful internships with notable organizations. I hope to use these internships as a way to get my foot in the door and ultimately, get a good job practicing public relations.
I am a senior public relations major at James Madison University. At JMU, I am president of the Sports Club Council and secretary of the co-ed pre-law fraternity Phi Alpha Delta. I am also a member of Lambda Pi Eta, Communication Studies Honors Fraternity, PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America), and play on the women’s club volleyball team. This past summer, I was an intern at QVC, Inc. working in their internal communication department. I have even had the opportunity to study abroad in Salamanca, Spain for six weeks during the summer of 2007.
When I’m not in class or participating in my millions of activities, I relieve my stress by running and working out. I am also a true boy at heart because of my love for sports and cars. Nothing is better than cheering on my Philly sports teams and driving in my Subaru WRX.
My career aspirations involve earning my law degree and M.B.A. in order to practice law in the corporate business world. I am currently waiting to hear back from the twelve law schools I applied to in the fall. I am extremely interested in blogging with other graduating college students who are also applying to law/graduate school. I want to provide credible advice and tips on things like writing your personal statement, which school is right for you, etc. I also want to give my blog readers the opportunity to share their own experiences and thoughts.

I am a public relations major at James Madison University, planning to graduate in spring of 2009 with a B.A. in communications studies and a minor in Italian. I am proud to be a founding member of the JMU Public Relations Student Society of America, for which I assist in writing the newsletter. Also at JMU, I participate in a Communication Studies Honors Fraternity, Lambda Pi Eta, as well as school-wide Honors Fraternity, Sigma Alpha Lambda. I serve on the Panhellenic council, as well as the executive board, for my sorority. I am also an active member of the Italian club. I enjoy participating in community service activities with the SPCA and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
My previous job experience in the field of communications includes two summers interning with the Media Relations Specialist for the Superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools, where I wrote press releases and managed the websites. I also have experience working on a Congressman’s winning campaign for the 2008 elections, where I guided PR ideas. I am currently working on the public relations for the school-wide “Be Beautiful Campaign”. I have the wonderful opportunity of studying abroad at a University in Reggio di Calabria, Italy for a summer.
I have love for the arts and coffee! When I’m not on the Internet or at the library, you can fine me cuddled up with a good book or participating in an exercise class at my local gym.
As a third year undergraduate, I am already looking ahead to the future and evaluating all of the possibilities available to me. I am currently focused on finding internships that will provide the optimal amount of learning and experience in the field of communications. I am getting familiar with the world of interviews and 40 hour work weeks. I hope someday to work for a Corporate PR firm, but for now I am blogging to connect with others in a similar situation, and understand the full extent of my options.

A current senior at James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg, Virginia, I am majoring in communication studies with concentrations in public relations and organizational communication.
Serving as the Publicity Student Assistant for Career and Academic Planning at JMU, I have gained valuable insight in career considerations and options, as well as refined my written and visual communications skills through promotional materials, such as PSAs and advertisements. In the past, I have served as the Marketing/Events Intern for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harrisonburg/Rockingham County and a Resident Advisor for the Office of Residence Life.
Outside of class and jobs, I spend my time as an active member of Phi Sigma Pi, co-educational honor fraternity. A member since Spring 2006, I have held four executive board positions both as an initiate and a Brother. I found my best friends in Phi Sigma Pi who have become my family away from home.
I must admit my addiction to reality television, such as the Real World and for The Love of Ray J. Going to the movies is one of my favorite activities, and I spend as much time as I can with friends and family. Enjoy our blog as you decide your post-grad path!
